OzWorld covers everyday life in Australia, which turns out to be a much wider brief than it sounds. Sport, small business, politics, culture, and the practical business of actually living here.
In practice that means pieces like what nobody tells you before moving to Melbourne, a look at where tennis actually lives in this city once the Australian Open packs up, and a straightforward guide to teaching your kids to call Triple Zero. Some of it is useful, some of it is just worth noticing.
How we write
Plainly, and with the actual numbers in. If a piece says renting is difficult, it says what the median rent is and where that figure came from. If it recommends something, it says what the thing costs and what it does not do. We would rather publish one properly researched article a week than five that could have been written by anyone about anywhere.
No filler, no hedging, and no pretending to be neutral about things that deserve a view. Readers can tell the difference between an opinion and a fact dressed up as one, so we keep them clearly separated.
Write for OzWorld
We are genuinely keen to have more writers here, and that is not a throwaway line at the bottom of a page. Australia is far too varied for one person to cover honestly. Someone who has actually run a cafe in Footscray, taught in a regional high school, arrived on a 482 visa, or spent fifteen years in local government knows things that cannot be researched from the outside.
You do not need to be a professional writer or to have been published before. If you can explain something clearly to someone at a barbecue, you can write for us. We will help with the editing.

These are the gaps we are most aware of, though a good pitch outside them is always welcome.

- Community sport, from junior club committees through to the elite pathway
- Regional and rural life, which almost every Australian publication underserves
- Food and the suburbs, particularly the migrant food cultures that shaped them
- Cost of living, bills, and money decisions explained without jargon
- Family life, schools, childcare and safety
- Local government and politics, explained plainly for people who are not obsessed with it
- Work, careers and what the job market is really doing

Use the contact form and tell us three things. A short brief about you, including where in Australia you are and what you do. The topics you would like to write about. And a link to anything you have written before, if you have written anything, which is genuinely optional.
That is the whole application. No sample article required up front, because asking strangers to write for free before a conversation has even started is a poor way to treat people. We read everything that comes in and we will come back to you either way.
